Tips and Tricks Top Two Tuesday!

Today over at Taylor's blog for Top 2 Tuesday the topic is Top 2 Tips. Um, hello, that is like one of my favorite things to write about! If for some crazy reason someone decides to drop by from her lovely blog. First of all hello! If you are looking for tips and tricks for cleaning, organizing, bargain shopping, or wedding planning please click on my tips and tricks Thursday label on the right hand side of the blog!

I don't know if I can pick my top 2 tricks but here are two I learned today while browsing realsimple.com:

Here's a kitchen tip-

1. If you tear up when cutting onions stick your head in the freezer for a couple seconds.

Here's a relationship tip-

2. Realize that if you can agree on what constitutes a clean room, you can agree on anything. If you are the kind of person who wants the vacuum tracks on the living-room carpet to last all week, you need to understand that your spouse is physically unable to hover three inches off the floor when traveling from point A to point B. You may have to shoulder the burden of raking the shag rug twice a day yourself. Conversely, if you are the type of person who “gets around ” to wiping up a raw chicken–juice spill on the counter, you should know that if you want to live with other humans, you need to surpass the hygiene standards of, say, the average fraternity-house bathroom. Fortunately, if you can compromise on the red hot–button subject of cleanliness, your marriage is unlikely to be thrown off course by comparatively less volatile topics, like politics, religion, and money.
And just because he is adorable and silly, Blue!

Yes, he poops, we've been over this!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

Tips and Tricks for keeping your home clean and organized:

For awhile I was getting emails from Peter Walsh. Some of you may have seen him on Harpo. He is an organizing genius. The other day I was browsing Harpo’s website and reading his tips and tricks for organizing the kitchen. Get this people, he said you shouldn’t have a junk draw! I told Hubby he said, “Where are you supposed to put your junk?” I know Jen is going to be appalled. She has several junk drawers. He also suggested putting our your utensils in a box and then when you use one take it out and put it back in the drawer. If you don’t take a utensil out of the box for a month, you don’t need it. When I was cleaning the kitchen this weekend I looked at the dusty spoons we never use and thought, we might use them for something someday! I guess that is how you end up on hoarders.

Peter's Basic Principles of De-Cluttering

Establish a vision for a room and agree on it.
Decide what will help you achieve that vision and what will not.
Purge your extra stuff.
Sort F.A.S.T.:

Fix a time and stick to it. Haul out any item that fits in one of the following categories:

Anything you haven't used in a year

Stuff that doesn't belong

Trash
Next, sort what's left into broad categories like bicycles or tools. Then organize them in separate zones in the room.
After you are clutter-free, create new routines to stay that way.

Anyspoon, organization expert Mr. Walsh suggests taking 15 mins every day to tidy up at the end of the day. This sounds good in theory, but by the time I workout, shower, eat dinner, watch tv, do dishes, make lunches, floss my teeth, I am tired!!!!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

Tips and Tricks for bargain shopping:

I am not very good at bargain hunting. I can’t do stores like TJ Maxx. For a long time I couldn’t even go in a Nordstrom Rack.

I also can’t bring myself to spend $34 on shirts I could get for under $20.

When I went home for my friend’s bachelorette party my mom and I went shopping. Shopping with my mom is the best because she helps me. I can say what I’m looking for and she will spend her whole time looking for stuff. She also tells me if stuff is cute or fits right.

I was planning on wearing a maxi dress to my friend’s Hawaiian themed bridal shower. I am also planning on wearing some other dresses to events this summer and I thought some spanx would help make me like the dresses in my closet more.

So we headed to the best place to get spanx…NORDSTROM RACK! Did you guys know that they have spanx at the Rack? They are under $20 compared to around $30 at the regular Nordstrom. I ended up getting a pair of Donna Karan shapewear for about $20 with tax.

The also have bras! I almost got a calvin klein bra for under $20 that is normally about $40.

My mom was thinking about getting a night gown, again for under $20.

Hubby has gotten some shirts and ties there before too.

Then we were on the hunt for some tops for me to wear to work. We hunted at Macy’s. I don’t know why there was so much stuff in puke green. Found a few things but we were mostly sticking to sales and clearance racks and I wasn’t in love with anything. We also looked in jcrew and banana at their sale racks. I told my mom it was just nice to go in a jcrew and banana again. I loved everything in jcrew, but I can’t bring myself to pay those prices.

We got excited right away when we walked into H&M. I had recently gone to H&M with my preggo friend S but she didn’t really find what she was looking for and I have to be honest the one we went to was not organized as nicely as the one my mom and I went to. When we walked into this one there was a nice assortment of professional looking tops and nice casual outfits. Pretty much everything in H&M is under $20 so you don’t have to search for sales or clearance or look at the price tags. You can just grab all the cute stuff!!

Pic from SF. Hubby needed a bib for his food at Scoma's. I'm wearing one of my new shirts.

Be careful about what size you grab though. I am normally a size 8 in pants. I am generally medium to large on top. I was grabbing larges and tens at H&M cause just by looking at them I could tell they were running a little small. Most of you know that wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses are weird sizes. For example I have worn bridesmaid dresses in size 12 before. My wedding dress was a size 10. At H&M I am a size 12 in tops.

Can’t wait to read what tips and tricks for bargain shopping you all have! Link up and lets all get those bargains!

Tips and Tricks Thursday preview and SYTYCD!

Ok, as promised, I am getting back into the swing of blogging.

Tips and Tricks topic: Tips and Tricks for bargain shopping.

I know I have said I was going to do this post for two weeks. It is really happening this week! The post is written and scheduled!

Don’t forget to watch the start of season 7 So You Think You Can Dance on Thursday on FOX! I will be doing SYTYCD posts on Fridays. This is my favorite reality show. I like to think since I was a dancer for most of my life I have a little bit of an expert opinion. I’m sure there will also be tons of new dances that I know nothing about like they had in past seasons. Definitely not an expert on Baliwood or any of the ballroom stuff.

New stuff this season: This season, the competition is the toughest it has ever been as the judges - Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman - will pick only 10 dancers (five guys and five girls) - from the thousands that auditioned - to compete for the title of America 's Favorite Dancer. They usually start with a top 20 and cut two dancers a week. No Mary Murphy? Hallelujah! In the past they also partner up the top 20. This season, the competitors will be partnered each week with a different SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE All-Star dancer - former SYTYCD finalists skilled in various dance styles. The Season Seven All-Star Dance Partners who will perform within their specific genres are: Stephen "tWitch" Boss, Comfort Fedoke, Courtney Galiano, Anya Garnis, Lauren Gottlieb, Neil Haskell, Allison Holker, Mark Kanemura, Pasha Kovalev, Kathryn McCormick, Ade Obayomi and Dominic "D-trix" Sandoval. Dominic is from my hometown and I cannot stand him! I like the rest of the all stars.

Let me refresh your memory on past seasons or catch you up! I didn’t watch season 1, Nick Lazzarini won, he was a lyrical dancer. He hasn’t been around much on the show since. I am sure I would have been a big fan of his. Season 2 Benji Schwimmer won, he was a ballroom dancer. I am a HUGE fan of Travis Wall, Season 2’s runner up, and a lyrical dancer. He choreographs a lot for the show and I love everything he does! Season 3 Sabra Johnson won. I was a fan of Travis Wall #2 aka Neil Haskell. He got third place. I am definitely excited that he is going to be on the show this season as an all-star. Season 4 Joshua Allen won. I honestly can’t remember who I liked that season! Season 5 Jeanine Mason won. That season our friends all did a draft of the top 20. We all put in $5 to give to whoever picked the winner. Hubby picked Jeanine! She was definitely a surprise win. My favorite that season was Evan. I loved his old school style and adorable smile. He got third place. Season 6 Russell Ferguson won. In season 6 there were 6 finalists instead of 4. Married couple Ashley and Ryan were 5th and 6th place. I liked them a lot. Jakob Karr another blonde male lyrical dancer (sensing a pattern in my faves yet?) was my favorite and by far the most talented! He was AMAZING!

I think we are due for one of my favorites to win this season!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

Topic: These are my favorite tips and tricks for carpet cleaning:
As you can tell from yesterday I should not be giving advice on carpet cleaning.
The only tip I know I learned from our maintenance guy when we moved into our new place. They are super sloppy when they paint and there were a lot of paint drops on our carpet. Yeah they don't put stuff down or anything! He said to use windex to get the paint out and it worked! I would have never thought!
I hope you guys have some tips and tricks or I might use windex on those big spots!

Topic: These are my favorite tips and tricks for carpet cleaning:

Hubby used Resolve which says on the bottle it is the #1 carpet stain remover to get out a couple tiny stains and now we have these two lovely spots.

Help me!

You don't have to do a whole post if you don't want to. Of course if you want to please feel free.

I'm off to the Padres game!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

This week’s topic is tips and tricks for planning a wedding to remember.

1. Get used to compromising.

I love and adore all you future bloggy brides and I know you want to avoid a starring role on the show Bridezilla. Avoiding any and all Bridezilla moments is impossible. But if you don’t get used to compromising you might be on the show. There is no way for you to have everything go your way unless you plan on looking like a two year old temper tantrum throwing fool. Guess what?! It is practice for that thing that comes after the wedding, MARRIAGE! You get to do a whole lot more compromising after the big white dress comes off.

We had an outdoor ceremony on a lovely sunny day in October 2009. I wanted flowers that wouldn’t wilt in the warm October sun and gave a more casual feel. I wanted gerbera daisies. Add theknot.com to your favorites. I visited that site a lot when planning our wedding. I found pictures on the knot of gerbera daisy boutonnières and showed them to Hubby. He was not a fan. We looked at a lot of boutonnieres and he only like roses. So we added some roses to the bouquets and the cake and ta da! Compromise! Honestly looking at my bouquet makes me smile because it is a symbol of the compromise I made to make my Hubby happy.

2. Pick a time frame and location.

You may want to get married on a special day or you might have your heart set on a special location. If you want to get married on a specific day at a specific place you might have to wait a year or two. So this could be compromise #1.

Hubby bought my dream ring when I was with him ring shopping in November of 2008. We were staying with my parents in Nor Cal and I called them right after he bought it. I will never forget calling my dad with the biggest smile on my face and telling him I was carrying a Tacori bag and he didn’t know what that was and was like uh ok. Dork! We showed them the ring when we got back to their place. But my great grandmother’s diamond wasn’t going to be put into the ring until December and Hubby still had to officially propose. Because we live 8 hours away from our parents there were discussions about where to have the wedding. I told my mom that if I had the wedding near her she would have to help me out a lot (compromise). So after the ring was bought my parents began the search.

Do I have amazing parents or what? I’m an only child so that might be part of the reason they didn’t mind spending their weekends looking at wedding sites for us. I would email them places I found online and they found places on their own and visited. They took a lot of things into consideration. I would say one of the top things on my dad’s list was if they accepted credit cards. I think this is a great tip for you planners. My dad realized that some of these places were going under and he didn’t want to write them a check for thousands of dollars without a guarantee of a wedding. He figured that he would be able to get his money back if he needed to for any reason from the credit card company. Plus hello frequent flyer miles! (I don’t know what card they used and what benefits they got, I’m just saying).

Pay attention to the vibe you get from the people and the place. There was a woman that forgot about their appointment, um yeah no thanks. Another place was near the train tracks. We didn’t notice until like time 20 of watching our wedding video but you can hear a train in the background of our ceremony. But this other place you would have to stop your ceremony and wait for the train to go by. My mom the green thumb that she was, paid attention to the flowers. She knew we were thinking summer time for the wedding and there were some places that looked pretty with lots of rose bushes but those bushes wouldn’t be in bloom when we wanted to get married.

The place we ended up getting married at impressed my parents. The owner/wedding planner was in the military so he is really good at sticking to a schedule and making sure everything gets done. They do hundreds of weddings and events every year. Their packages were all inclusive. They were the dj, caterer, cake maker and had contacts and people that were familiar with the site for the florist, photographers, and reverend. That made things 1,000 times easier because we didn’t have to interview and meet with people, especially since we don’t live close by.

I realized I have a lot of tips and wisdom on this topic. I might do more posts with more advice.

*Don't be jealous of my classy wedding pictures!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

This week's topic-
I use these tips and tricks to take great pictures:

I am not so good with the pictures, that is why I picked this topic. I can't wait to read what everyone else posts. I googled some tips for you to.

Begining Photography Tips:
1. Move in closer.
-Each time you spot a subject, snap a shot and then move in closer for a better shot. Having your subject almost fill the frame helps your viewer understand and appreciate your photo. Also, details are often more interesting than an overall view.

Keep moving in closer until you are sure the photo will successfully represent your subject.

2. Be quick.
-As the motto of one of BetterPhoto old t-shirts states, "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later."
3. Compose with care.
-Strive to lead the eye along an interesting path through the photo, with the use of strong lines or patterns.

•Keep the horizon level;
•Crop out extra elements that you are not interested in (more on this is the next tip);
•Consciously place your subject where you think it most belongs rather than just accepting it wherever it happens to land in the photo;
•Play with perspective so that all lines show a pattern or lead the eye to your main subject;
4. Be selective.
-You can:
•Focus in on a close-up that tells the whole story;
•Move around until you arrange the telephone lines into a neat pattern that leads to the subject; or
•Take a panning shot that makes the cable car remain in focus while the background goes blurry.
5. Focus on your subject.
You will find that a smaller depth-of-field (and smaller f-stop #) focuses all the attention upon your subject. This is great for taking a picture of your child, your dog, or your husband - subjects stand out against a blurry background.
6. Experiment in time.
-Use a slow shutter speed and a tripod to make a pretty picture of any creek or stream. On the other hand, you can use a fast shutter speed (1/500 and up) to capture an object in motion.

Combining a fast shutter speed with a long lens, you sports buffs can get a trophy of your own when you are able to catch the expression on your favorite runningback's face as he slips past the final defense toward a winning touchdown. Remember, catching the moment in fast-paced action photography may take a little more practice so hang in there.

7. Look at the light.
-ow is the light affecting your subject? Is the subject squinting?

Is the light blazing directly and brightly upon your whole subject? This works well if you are in love with the bold colors of your subject.

Side lighting, on the other hand, can add drama but can also cause extreme, hard-to-print contrasts.

Lastly, indirect light can be used to make your subject glow soft and pretty.

8. Watch the weather.
Look outside and decide whether or not you are going to want to have the sky in your picture.
If it's overcast, simply keep the sky out of your pictures as much as possible. This is usually the best way to avoid both muted tones in your subject and washed-out skies in your background. You might also find black and white pictures of an overcast day more pleasing than color.

When the day is beautiful, go ahead and make the most of it.

9. Keep it simple.
10. Be bold.

Don't know what some of those things mean!

Tips and Tricks Thursday

I use these tips and tricks to turn my frown upside down:

* get a new haircut

* go shopping

* have a girl’s outing

* workout

* read a book

* scrapbook

As I said yesterday, I have been moody lately. I had an amazing weekend in LA but started slamming doors and feeling depressed as soon as I walked in the apartment. So I have been trying to come up with stuff to get me out of this funk.

I got a new haircut a few weeks ago and I am not loving it. My bangs are not what I wanted. They are too long and I think they look exactly like they used to. The layers are too short and don’t look good when I use the hot rollers. Maybe I should force myself to shower earlier in the evening so I can blow dry and straighten the next day.

My wonderful friend S that is pregnant and has a messed up foot (I need to blog about that because it is information everyone needs to know) agreed to have a girl’s outing and go shopping with me. We need to get some presents for our friend T’s wedding shower and bachelorette party. I am in T’s wedding this summer and S was supposed to be matron of honor but little Ethan decided to show up and ruin everything! T is being an awesome bride. Our dresses were $20 and I’m so excited to wear it again and again after the wedding. She also just said wear whatever nice and cute black shoes you have. I am over my black shoes and wanted to get a new pair. Hubby killed that idea. I also wanted to get a few work spring update items and Hubby said you got a new shirt at Costco. Wahoo one $12 shirt!

I have this nagging you need to be active and stay healthy thing in the back of my head. But I hate it and I am completely lacking motivation. I am going to try and push past it and hopefully some of those feel good endorphins will show up.

I am reading the third book in the Thomas Kinkade Cape Light series, A Gathering Place . I am really enjoying it. Maybe I need to turn the tv off and read!

I think working on the wedding scrapbook might bring a smile to my face. I can’t exactly figure out what is slowing me down with it. Might be the planning of the book. I like to plan everything out ahead of time.

Looking forward to reading all your tips and tricks! Link up so we can all cheer up!

Tips and Tricks Thursday!

I have a great idea! I was thinking about why I blog. I started blogging to have a place to write my thoughts and feelings about life. I keep blogging because I have met an amazing group of people. I love reading about your lives and that you laugh along with me through stories about my life. I would never want to stop blogging because I feel like I now need these relationships we’ve created. You are all a part of my life that I don’t ever want to lose. You guys with me? Plus, where else can you get advice from hundreds of people? I value that some of you are parents and can give me advice that I may some day need; I hope future brides appreciate the advice about weddings I can give them.

So here is my great idea: a weekly day of advice! I’m thinking Tips and Tricks Thursdays. I will post a topic and my advice if I have any and you can post your advice and link up! I’m thinking topics like time management (how you manage your time in the mornings and evenings), style tips (for both men and women), career advice (tricks to get ahead and tips for letting your boss know you are quitting), etc. What do you guys think? Is this something you want to do with me? Are there things you need advice about? Let me know and I’ll post them! I will post my first topic preview next Wednesday. So excited!
