Are you camera savvy?

So Hubby and I get to pick out a gift from a website but we are having trouble picking one.

I think we are leaning toward the camera right now since our other camera seems to be about to die. Currently we have a Canon Powershot A520 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom. The camera we could get is a Fujifilm FinePix AX200 12 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD.

Here are the technical details of the canon:
4.0-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 11 x 15-inch prints
4x optical zoom, 9-point AiAF, 13 shooting modes
Large 1.8-inch display; D!GIC Image Processor for faster speed and vibrant colors

These are the technical details of the fuji:
12-megapixel resolution for large, photo-quality prints
Fujinon 5x wide-angle optical zoom lens
Capture 720p HD movies with sound and still shots in 16:9 that can be played back on any HD-ready television (or a home PC)
Panoramic Shooting mode; Picture Search
Display Size: 2.7 inches

I don't know much about cameras but 12 megapixels instead of 4 sounds better to me and the fuji has a bigger display too.

What do you camera savvy people think? Should we get a new camera? The other options are an Emeril knife set, a portable dvd player, watches, I think a purse, a gps, and some other crap I can't remember.

  1. I would for sure say a new camera, especially with your baby boy on the way! I wish I could help more, but I don't know enough about cameras. I have a small Cannon and I love it!

  3. If you dont have a gps, I think they are the best. thing.ever! But, a new camera might be best with baby on the way! I would say the higher megapixels, the better, but I think Canon has a better rep than fujifilm...Eeks, dont know!

  7. I'm not really camera savvy, but we had a fujifilm finepix a few years ago and we *loved* it. Unfortunately we lost it on a vacation.

  8. I would pick the camera but remember the extra pixels are useless if you are not putting it on nice paper or having them printed. You will never need that much resolution to just post photos on blog or website.

  9. My boyfriend's camera is a FujiFilm and he likes it a lot. I have a skinny Kodak camera and really like it. I want a DSLR but I don't have that kind of money.

  10. I would also asy the camera, and simply bc it is always nice to have a spare point and shoot. Hubs dropped ours and the LCD cracked, and I could send it back, but would cost almost as much to replace that as to buy a new one. It was a cannon power shot, so, i would get the camera. I love Cannon cameras, but I have never tried anything else. Fuji I hear is good, I am dying to try a Nikon DSLR though.

Having more megapixels does two things for your photos.
1.If you are going to enlarge a print say to an 8X10 or larger, it will make the picture less grainy when you print it, which is always a nice feature, but unnecessary for most uses.
2.More megapixels is good if you crop your photos in photoshop, which for some is also unnecessary. I myseld still don;t have photoshop, or even a working computer to upload photos too, sigh...

So that is why they say, you don't have to spend 100-200$ more for megapixels if your use for camera is mostly limited to capturing 4X6s and printing them. But you can get a free camera with more megapixels, get it!!!

Congrats on your baby to be!! Mommyhood is the best!
